I am an independent appraiser and consultant based in New York. I offer you the benefits gained from over half a century of working in the field of rare printed books, manuscripts, autograph letters and archives. My career began with Christie’s King Street in London in 1964. I was relocated to New York where I became the founder of Christie’s Book Department in 1977. My own advice and guidance resulted in triumphant sales such as the Leonardo da Vinci Codex Leicester ($30,802,500 in 1994). I have sold two copies of the Western world’s first substantial printed book, the Gutenberg Bible, as well as numerous examples of the First Folio of Shakespeare, the first printing of the Declaration of Independence and of the first edition of Audubon The Birds of America.
Since 2001 I have been an independent consultant specializing in appraisals and a wide variety of consultancy services. These include advice to emerging and established collectors from the private sector, to inheritors of collections, to institutions, and to the retail trade.
